Ashley Illustration

I plan to document the long road to becoming a fabled 'freelance illustrator' after graduating with an MA in illustration. There will be highs, lows and cider. Lots of cider.

I have gone slightly awol as of late due to being outdoorsy and being generally busy. I am spending today switching between job hunting and drawing so I should have lots of new things to wack on here soon!

I made a pattern - would you look at that..

I have been experimenting with other ways to be creative whilst I am organising my life (dramatic) - including my style/lifestyle/ramble blog. I decided to give YouTube a go, to go alongside everything else I am doing. If I can get over the terrible sound of my voice on camera, then I will do a lot more and hopefully learn a bit more animation and about myself along the way.

This week I was featured and interviewed for the Camberwell UAL blog, take a look!

I did a kind of skills swap with the ace Nina from Toujours Toi Family Affairs! I made Nina a painted canvas to adorn her bathroom walls and she sent me the most beautiful dress to adorn me!

I am hoping to start offering custom canvas’s, portraits and invitations over on my Etsy shop - if anyone would be interested?

My poor, lowly sewing machine has been hidden away for far too long. When I first started my MA degree in illustration, one of my aims for the course was to illustrate and print my own patterns for fabric and then make my own clothes and furnishing with them. As with everything, a year seems a lot longer in theory than reality and that aim never came to fruition.

My Great Grandma was a machinist and my Nanna has just given me a pile of ace vintage patterns to get started with. More than the clothes patterns themselves, I was more taken with the fashion illustrations adorning the packets. The grey hair and colours are fantastic. I have a full blog post over on my personal blog if you fancy listening to me ramble a bit more? - Wake up the Land.

Happy Eats-er, see what I did there? Eh?… cheers to a 4 day weekend - fill yourselves with chocolate.
I thought I would do a quick painting to mark the occasion (it is quick so not my finest work but…) I based it around the original meaning of easter, which was Eostre - the goddess of fertility who used to wander around with a hare (easter bunny if you please).

The way I like to illustrate usually produces less than beautiful people, which is why I wanted to throw myself a bit of a curve ball and attempt a fashion illustration. The whole purpose of fashion illustration is to add another dimension to the clothes and make the clothes seem appealing to the viewer, which is usually helped along by pretty people.

This may be a controversial opinion but I am super bored of seeing the same type of fashion illustration everywhere. It is usually pencil sketched, realistic looking with a hint of colour somewhere in the drawing. Don’t get me wrong - the end result is beautiful but it all just looks so samey. I wanted colour, paint and a background.

I wanted a back story to the illustration, which sounds weird but I think it adds a greater interest for me and my drawings. I decided upon creating a Motel, all girl rock band. My big plan was to create a whole series (which I hopefully still will attempt) but life scuppered my plan. The illustration features one of the girls from the band ‘Motel Rocks’ getting ready for a gig in her dressing room. I am really into limited colour palettes at the moment and I didn’t want to stick to a typical black and white rock-type palette. I originally settled on orange, pink, yellow and black but thought it may be too bright to get across a rock band feel. I scoured the internet and amazingly found a similar colour decision on the front of a ‘Runaways’ album and was sold!

Have a look at the rest of the entries on the Motel Rocks website and blog! I can’t wait to see the winning entry, if you are interested in fashion - the Motel blog is great for inspiration.
